CONSERVATIONISTS will take mining giant Xstrata to the Land Court later this month in an attempt to stop a huge coalmine going ahead at Wandoan on the eastern Darling Downs.
Friends of the Earth will argue the State Government should reject the mine because of its environmental impact and carbon emissions.
Spokesman Bradley Smith said his organisation challenged the proposal because, as one of the world's largest coalmines, it would create a sizeable 0.15 per cent of annual global emissions the amount generated from burning coal mined on the site.
"It sounds like a low number but it's huge given the impact on world figures," Dr Smith said. "The court case ... will be a test case in Queensland and the first case of its kind in the Queensland Land Court." Read More
