Mining Ban in Tourist Hinterland Unlikely

THE demands of a Queensland regional council to be quarantined from coalmining and gas development were dealt a blow yesterday after Premier Anna Bligh said she would not intervene in negotiations to tap reserves in the region.

The Scenic Rim Regional Council, in the Gold Coast hinterland, is seeking a legally binding ban on coalmining and coal-seam gas exploration under amendments to the Mineral Resources Act.  Read More
