MINING operations in Queensland towns such as Mount Isa that have been built around mines could technically become illegal under the Queensland government's new legislation that bans mining within 2km of cities and towns.
Queensland's Resources Council claimed yesterday the Bligh government's move meant 10 per cent of the 2600 mining exploration leases still current in Queensland would be null and void.
The body representing smaller miners, the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies, also claimed the legislation would not work as mining companies would negotiate directly with councils to circumvent the state government ban.
The state's farmers railed against the plan saying the same protection given to people in cities and towns should be extended to farmers. Read More
