JULIA Gillard's top water adviser has urged the Prime Minister and premiers to place on the national reform agenda the risks water systems face from nearby coal-seam gas projects.
The Australian can reveal that a landmark review the National Water Commission has handed to the Council of Australian Governments - which meets in Canberra on Friday - warns that the impact of coal-seam gas on water quality has become a pressing matter.
Last night, the NWC's acting chief executive, James Cameron, said the burgeoning coal-seam gas industry had the potential to deliver significant economic benefits "but there are also significant potential risks to water and our water management as a result of the scale of the development of the sector".
