A Lake Macquarie Greens' councillor says the threat posed by coal seam gas extraction cannot be underestimated.
A motion from Cr Phillpa Parsons was supported last night, with council staff asked to prepare a discussion paper on the impact on underground aquifers, agricultural land and the lake itself.
A submission will also be prepared for a New South Wales Government inquiry.
Cr Parsons says she has grave fears about gas extraction.
