Abbott Rejects Green Gas Bill

An Australian Greens push to give farmers a greater say over coal seam gas miners accessing their land looks set to fail, with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott changing his tune on a veto.
Mr Abbott on Friday said farmers had a 'right to say no' if they did not want miners to explore and extract coal seam gas on their land.

His comments were welcomed by farmers and raised hopes within the Greens that the coalition would support a private member's bill giving rural landholders a veto over mining and exploration.

But returning to Canberra on Monday for the first session of parliament after the winter break, Mr Abbott told reporters the coalition would not be backing the Greens' bill.
