VICTORIA has signed up to national coal seam gas rules.
This follows calls from the Victorian Farmers Federation for farmers to have the power of veto over mining on their land.
Resources Minister Michael O'Brien said while farmers would not have the right to refuse mining, the new rules put them in a stronger position.
"Victoria already has the strongest rights over mining in the nation, and this will strengthened that,'' he said.
"But with rising energy costs we cannot ignore new forms of energy in our own backyard.''
The State Government yesterday signed onto the National Partnership Agreement on Coal Seam Gas.
Other signatories include the federal, Queensland, South Australia and NSW governments.
Signing up means CSG mining in Victoria will now be subject to tighter scientific and independent expert scrutiny.
