Opponents of the coal-seam gas industry say about 50 protesters have gathered at a Metgasco work site near Casino where a man has chained himself to a bulldozer.
Boudicca Cerese, from the Northern Rivers branch of the Lock the Gate Alliance, says the protest is against moves to build a waste-water holding pond on the site.
"(There are) issues with overflow, issues with liner failure, issues with seepage into alluvial aquifers," she said.
"All the issues that have been identified in the government's own draft aquifer-interference policy, in which they say that evaporation ponds are not useful for the storage of waste water."
Metgasco has previously reassured the community about the nature of the waste water produced by its exploration activities.
The company says it is basically salty water that could feasibly be treated and used in agriculture.
