'Toxic pond' infuriates protesters

THE State Government has been accused of playing "word games" to justify a lack of action to stop coal seam gas evaporation ponds being built in the state.
Lock the Gate Northern Rivers spokeswoman Boudicca Cerese made the claim yesterday as a protest continued at a site at Shannonbrook.
The site, about 7km south west of Casino, is home to an existing pond as well as one being constructed by coal seam gas company Metgasco.
An activist was arrested at the site Wednesday after chaining himself to a bulldozer.
About 60 protesters returned yesterday to take matters into their own hands, shovelling dirt into the pond under construction.
The group believe Metgasco is operating its holding ponds as evaporation ponds which have been banned by the State Government.
