HILLS Labor councillors have united to stop future coal seam gas mining in the Hills.
At last week's council meeting, Cr Barbara Burton called on the state government to stop the issue of exploration licences until proper regulations were in place.
"There was drilling in Dural in 1972 for coal seam gas and although it wasn't economic to miners then, supply and demand in Sydney will (soon) equalise," she said.
"From 2013 onwards demand for gas in Sydney will exceed supply."
"Electricity prices will go up and coal seam gas will become more attractive.
Cr Burton said drilling was taking place in Camden at 800m, and so fracking was possible in Dural at 1000m.
