ABORIGINAL groups in NSW are positioning themselves to be among the pioneers of uranium exploration in the state.
The development is likely to heighten tensions between indigenous people and green groups, which reacted furiously to news last month that the NSW Aboriginal Land Council was also seeking to exploit coal-seam gas reserves, in order help release communities from the welfare trap.
In a speech in Adelaide today, NSW Energy Minister Chris Hartcher will outline the new process for uranium exploration licences and will reveal that several parties have already expressed an interest in the exploration of potential uranium deposits - including the NSWALC.
A decades-old ban on uranium exploration in NSW was lifted earlier this year, passing through parliament narrowly after opposition from Labor and the Greens.
