Seventy activists blockade CSG site

Protestors blockade a Metgasco coal seam gas site near Casino where they claim a banned evaporation pond is being constructed.

ABOUT seventy activists have blockaded a coal seam gas site near Casino protesting the construction of a wastewater holding pond on the edge of a floodplain.

Local musician and fourth-generation resident, Davey Bob Ramsay, chained himself to a bulldozer at dawn this morning to "highlight the threats posed by CSG wastewater to land and water in the Richmond Valley".

The police rescue squad cut Mr Ramsay free at about 10.50am to cheers from the crowd including chants of "On you Davey Bob" and "Go bloody Ramsay".

Police have taken Mr Ramsay into custody but have yet to charge him.

Lock the Gate Alliance Northern Rivers spokesperson Boudicca Cerese said the group is calling on the NSW Government to honour its promise to ban evaporation ponds 12 months ago.
