Contest over CSG exploration in Wollongong

Apex Energy and the New South Wales Aboriginal Council are competing for the right to explore for coal seam gas in a large area of land around Wollongong.

Apex Energy and its partner Ormil Energy used to hold a petroleum exploration licence or PEL over the area between Dapto and Clifton but it expired earlier this year.

The company won't comment on why it failed to renew its PEL by the required deadline.

On 5 March the NSW Aboriginal Land Council lodged an application for a Petroleum Special Prospecting Authority (PSPA) on 5 March over the area.

A week later Apex Energy submitted its application for a new PEL.
