The next phase of a Hunter Valley doctor's study on the health impacts of mining will compare the lung function of children with daily data from new dust monitors.

Singleton GP Dr Tuan Au is looking for volunteers for daily testing at his surgery after being told carrying out the tests at local schools may be disruptive.

About 900 children were tested in the first stage, which found one in six had lower lung function, while the national average for asthma is one in nine.

Dr Au says he plans to test children in Singleton, Muswellbrook, Scone and Gloucester.
