Coal seam gas miner Dart Energy has received approval to drill wells north of Newcastle which, it says, will help produce rosy red tomatoes.
Dart, which has interests in coal bed methane in eastern Australia, Asia and Europe, has agreed to supply coal seam gas (CSG) to produce heat and electricity for a new $65 million glasshouse project at Fullerton Cove being developed by Maria's Farm Veggies.
As well as tomatoes, Maria's plans to grow capsicums and cucumbers for the Australian market.
Dart is finalising negotiations to secure a drilling rig and says it plans to start site preparations in coming weeks after being granted government regulatory approval and land access.
The company recently shelved plans to separately float its international business due to poor market conditions and a fall in its own share price, which has dived from 72 cents to 16.5 cents in the past year
