THE NSW mining industry has vowed to press ahead with new coal projects despite mounting opposition, as figures show the state economy and the government's financial wellbeing depend on it.
While the Coalition came to power with a strategy to deal with competing interests in land use, it has inherited a burgeoning coal industry, promoted under Labor.
Coal now provides the lion's share of nearly $2 billion in mining royalties, a near-tenfold increase on a decade ago. The government faces decisions on applications for 29 new mines or expansions, which would increase coal production from 190 million tonnes to about 330 million tonnes by the end of the decade.
