Energy company Santos has withdrawn a planning application for 550 coal seam gas wells near Narrabri, in the north west of New South Wales.
The plans were originally drawn up by Eastern Star which was proposing to invest more than $2 billion in the project in the Pilliga State Forest.
Santos acquired Eastern Star last November and has been reviewing its operations.
The company's Sam Crafter says the application has been withdrawn and a new one will be lodged once Santos assesses data from exploration drills.
"We've got an exploration program where we're committed to drilling 50 wells over the next three years," he said.
"That data is going to be crucial to give us the information that we need to work out the size of the development we take forward."
Greens MP Jeremy Buckingham says it is a setback for the coal seam gas industry.
"It comes on the back of increasing community and investor awareness about the risks associated (with coal seam gas)," he said.
