GREENS representatives and Mackay Conservation Group members have voiced their concerns about both coal, and coal seam gas, exploration permits being granted in areas close to Mackay.
Greens candidate for Whitsunday Jonathon Dykyj said he wanted to spread the word about both forms of exploration.
"75% of southern Queensland is under coal seam gas exploration and 50% of central Queensland is under coal seam gas exploration," Mr Dykyj said.
The Mackay group's planned protest coincided with word of coal exploration permits being granted in areas as close as 18 kilometres from Mackay's CBD.
