The expansion of the Ord Irrigation Scheme in Western Australia is also opening up mining opportunities.
As roads are built further towards the WA/NT border, the viability of some resources projects are getting better.
That's certainly the case for the company Advent Energy.
It's got the lease on a couple of gas fields near Ord Stage 2 and executive director David Breeze says it's working quickly to bring those fields into production to meet the region's growing demand for energy.
"The people that could use this gas include the new Ord irrigation area (Ord Stage 2)", he said.
"The expansion of the Ord is being sold as unpowered lots, so the gas could go into a power plant to supply electricity to those farmers and industry."
Mr Breeze says existing projects such as the Argyle Diamond mine and the upcoming Sorby Hills lead-silver mine could also benefit from a new supply of energy.
The two gas fields being tested by Advent Energy are the Vienta and Waggon Creek sites, which are estimated to have recoverable gas resources of 8BCF (billion cubic feet) and 12BCF respectively.
"We are looking to complete the testing in the next few weeks," said Mr Breeze.
"And then during next year, we'll look to complete the analysis and examine the potential to put contracts into place to sell the gas."
