The Wonnarua Nation is demanding more consultation with the New South Wales Government over its Draft Strategic Regional Land Use policy for the Upper Hunter.
The Wonnarua people are the traditional owners of a large proportion of the region.
But the indigenous people say while a lot of attention is being focused on the thoroughbred and viticulture industries, the cultural significance of the land is being overlooked.
President of the Wonnarua Nation Aboriginal Corporation, Laurie Perry says they will be taking their concerns to public consultation forums in the Upper Hunter next week.
"I see the land strategy only covering a small section of what the Aboriginal issues are," he said.
"We should be properly consulted on a larger extent then what it is at the moment."
Winemakers and thoroughbred breeders have already dismissed the draft policy, saying it does not offer them enough protection against coal seam gas exploration and coal mining.
