The health of marine life in the Gladstone Harbour has yet again become a matter of discussion as it has been claimed that dredging has caused illness to the fishes.
In an independent report, veterinary scientist Dr. Matt Landos has argued that Queensland Government might have to pay $20 million in the form of compensation to the fishermen and businesses who have succumbed to losses because of the sick fishes.
It has been reported that about 60 Gladstone fishermen and businesses have faced losses because of outbreak of lesions and cloudy eyes among fish and other marine animals in Gladstone Harbour. It is believed that the illness has been caused because of dredging.
The affected businesses are of the view that dredging linked to coal seam gas and liquefied natural gas projects have caused illness to the fishes. Last year, the Labor-state government informed that a scientific investigation over the rampant illness of the fishes have been called for.
The investigation thus carried out doesn’t show any link between flood and the illness of the fishes. Previously it was believed that the flooding of 2011 might have caused illness among the fishes. However, the independent report has claimed that increased dredging in the Gladstone Harbour has caused illness among the fishes.
