Australia's Stanmore Coal gains Japanese government grant for Queensland coal project

Australian coal explorer Stanmore Coal is the recipient of a A$1.2 million ($1.23 million) research grant from the Japanese government to assist in the development of the company's The Range project in Queensland's Surat coal field, said the company in a statement Tuesday.

The funding agreement was signed in Tokyo during a recent coal marketing trip undertaken by Stanmore Coal that brought forward interest from Japanese end-users and power utilities, said the coal exploration company.

"This is a strong vote of confidence in our export coal product as we work through the important process of selecting our initial joint venture partner at The Range," said Stanmore Coal managing director, Nick Jorss, in the company statement to the Australian Securities Exchange.
