Minister cautious on groundwater

FEDERAL Water Minister Tony Burke has indicated he will limit groundwater entitlements in the final Murray-Darling Basin plan because he is concerned by the lack of science in the area.
Mr Burke said deficient information about groundwater extraction was similar to uncertainties surrounding coal-seam gas.

"My worry with the groundwater issues goes right back to the sort of conditions that I had to put in place when I was dealing with coal-seam gas," Mr Burke said.

"I find it really hard to believe that we have got enough information to make some fairly ambitious basin-wide calls on underground water right now.

"I think my instincts are more cautious than what's contained within the draft on groundwater."
