Labor selling out environment with green tape cuts, says Greens leader Bob Brown

GREENS Leader Bob Brown has attacked moves to cut so-called "green tape", accusing federal Labor of selling out the environment at the behest of multi-national companies.
Top CEOs are meeting with Prime Minister Julia Gillard and state premiers today as part of a Council of Australian Government's business roundtable, with the streamlining of environmental regulations at the top of the agenda.

Senator Brown said Australia's "patently weak" environmental laws should be toughened, not weakened in line with the demands of big business.

"The coal industry and the coal seam gas industry have this minister and this government dancing on a string," Senator Brown said.

"We need to strengthen environmental law to make sure the public amenity of the environment that Australians enjoy and are proud of, is protected against this onrush of multi-national corporations that is largely owned overseas.
