Farmers from the Wellington district will meet for their annual general meeting next Thursday at the Wellington Hotel and high on the agenda will be an intention to join the march by other farmers on NSW Parliament House.
Wellington NSW Farmers’ Association executive councillor Peter Martel says this will be certainly an issue the farmers will discuss at the AGM.
A report will also go on the Boot Muster held in the town recently which was a superb success and featured NSW Farmers’ president Fiona Simson.
The president wrote about some of the issues facing local farmers in The Land newspaper.
“Benchmarking of a farmer’s water, land and assets might mean less expensive legal battles.
“Legal support for the landowners would help to fight the mega-rich, mega-powerful CSG companies,” she wrote in an opinion column.
“It’s important to have a clear and scientific understanding of what the companies are going to do with the water and salts before they extract and what impacts that will have on existing users – even those that are miles away.
“The understanding that this industry will change small agricultural communities for generations, so the community needs to be accepting of that change.
“The NSW government would do well to listen to property owner Bill’s West advice as they decide what standards to set for CSG in NSW.
“Good land and water is scarce in Australia and we can’t put it at risk with practices that have proven disastrous overseas.”
