Miners seek to bury large legal burden

MINING explorers want a massive review and restructuring of environmental and development laws including giving farmers the right to opt out of the strategic cropping land regime.
The Association of Mining and Exploration Companies said it wanted the next government to review the Environmental Protection Act and mining legislation, reviewing the two mega departments of Department of Employment and Economic Development and Innovation and the Department of Environment and Resource Management.

AMEC said the intention of the review would be to improve efficiencies, including reducing the burden of reporting and approvals.

It also wants to amend the Wild Rivers legislation and a co-funded drilling incentive scheme with industry.

"It is not enough to say that Queensland is rich in resources and investment will naturally flow to the state," AMEC's Simon Bennison said.

"While it has enjoyed a position as one of the world's major producers and investment destinations, this is fast being eroded by the entrance of new mineral producing provinces from emerging mineral producing countries.
