Coal mine plan leaves landholders in black hole : Victoria



The Victorian Government's plan to offer new coal allocations in the Latrobe Valley has heightened the fears of farmers and landholders.

Energy Minister Michael O'Brien this week confirmed the government will ask for expressions of interest from companies seeking an allocation of the Latrobe Valley's brown coal resource.

Many of the companies known to be interested in their own share of the resource are those investigating methods to reduce the moisture content of brown coal.

One of them is the Australian Energy Company whose chairman Allan Blood told ABC Gippsland's Mornings Program that it would be expressing its interest in a coal allocation.

He was formerly involved with the company Australian Power and Energy Limited (APEL) which secured a coal allocation in a tender offered in 2002.
