VICTORIAN Liberal MP and upper house speaker Ken Smith has backed a Gippsland shire's ban on coal and gas mining in their region.
The Bass Coast Shire last night voted to reject any exploration for both coal and gas within its jurisdiction.
Mr Smith is the local member for Bass and today said he agreed with the shire's decision.
"We've got a farming community down here and the last thing that we need to have now is people exploring the countryside from the shoreline up into the hills looking to dig the place up," Mr Smith said.
"We don't want it, we don't need it."
An application to explore for coal bed methane plus brown and black coal across the Bass Coast and South Gippsland shires was lodged by Queensland-based Leichhardt Resources in February this year.
