Gas plan poorly received

PLANS: A map showing the core holes gas company AGL will drill.

Gas Company AGL’s plan to drill a core hole to explore for coal seam gas about five kilometres east of Denman was poorly received at a public information night this week.

About 50 people attended the Denman meeting on Tuesday evening with almost half the audience speaking up and none expressing support for drilling near the town.

The company has secured a landowner’s permission to drill a core hole called Dalswinton 1 near the Golden Highway.

Another core hole called Howick 1 will be drilled on Macquarie Generation land.

Access and compensation agreement has been signed for the core holes.

AGL representatives said the results of the exploration drilling would determine if and where coal seam gas extraction went ahead in the region.

Muswellbrook Shire councillor Stephen Ward attended the meeting and expressed his concern at the impact coal seam gas exploration would have in the area.

“The NSW government needs to come clean about what dealings they’ve had with AGL to drill core holes on Macquarie Generation land,” Cr Ward said.
