Arrow Energy wants to sink more than 7,500 wells in the Surat Basin by 2035.
Its environmental impact statement (EIS) says that will have little effect on groundwater systems because the company will reuse the water that is released in coal seam gas (CSG) production.
Central Downs chairman Graham Clapham says that is not an ironclad guarantee.
"Until there is actually some de-watering of the coals, it is unknown at what rate the water will transfer between the groundwater bodies [Walloon coal measure and the Condamine alluvial aquifer]," he said.
