THERE is more brown coal in Bacchus Marsh than expected, according to Mantle Mining’s latest report.
But the West Australian company’s exploration manager Callum Lamont said the results were preliminary and only the first stage in a long process.
The report to the Australian Stock Exchange said the hole intersected 40.1 metres of brown coal rather than a predicted thickness of 22.3 metres, equating to an 80 per cent increase.
“The original estimate was between 1 and 2 billion tonnes in the target area,” Mr Lamont said.
“It looks like the quantity would be towards the higher end of the estimated range in terms of volume.”
However, Mr Lamont said the company was yet to do an analysis of the quality of the coal.
“The result are from hole 10, which is the most southerly of the bore holes on the fringe of the target area,” he said.
