CSG mining sparks fears for Mary River : Meeting

A residents' group says locals are worried about the health of the Mary River catchment in south-east Queensland if approval is given for coal seam gas (CSG) extraction and coal mining in the region.

Maps from the Queensland Department of Mines and Energy show several areas in the Mary River catchment are already covered by exploration permits.

The Gympie Water, Air and Soil Protection Group will hold a public meeting in Gympie tonight on the issue.

Group spokeswoman Adele Coombs says residents are worried about the health of the catchment and prime farming land.

"We're concerned about the current mining boom in Queensland and how the whole Mary River catchment area is covered by exploration tenures for both coal and gas," she said.

"We're concerned about protecting the whole river catchment for its environmental and social values and we want to see it safeguarded."

Tonight's meeting will be held at the Gympie Community Band Hall at 7:00pm (AEST).
