A ROW erupted yesterday over the meaning of agreements between mining company Santos, farmers and the NSW government to suspend coal-seam gas exploration at one site in the state's north while it continued elsewhere.
The agreements, brokered by NSW Nationals MP Kevin Anderson, ended a 19-day blockade of a property, Glasserton, near Gunnedah, where the Caroona Coal Action Group objected to Santos drilling an exploration well on prime farmland before a local water study had been completed.
Santos vice-president for eastern Australia, James Baulderstone, told The Australian yesterday: "Our understanding was that if we backed away at Glasserton, and provided we behaved reasonably, we would have the support of the NSW Farmers Association to proceed elsewhere."
