INDEPENDENT Federal MP Tony Windsor has achieved groundbreaking legislative reforms to generate tighter scientific accountability for coal seam gas (CSG) mining exploration and extraction.
The reforms were announced this week after the government approved a $200 million package in exchange for Mr Windsor and fellow Independent Rob Oakeshott’s support of the $11 billion mining resource rent tax (MRRT) legislation, which passed the House of Representatives on Tuesday night.
Mr Windsor said he was pleased Prime Minister Julia Gillard acted on an issue which has caused great concern across the country, and the new reforms would help protect valuable farm land and underground water resources from the unknown threats of CSG extraction and coal mining.
