The City of Sydney has outlawed coal seam gas extraction in a further submission to the NSW Government inquiry.
Amongst a raft of suggestions, the submission called for coal seam gas (CSG) extraction exclusion zones. This includes restricting exploration in urban areas and regional centres, and calls for the New South Wales Strategic Regional Land Use Policy and Regional Strategic Plans to “mandate protection from mining in sensitive areas including important agricultural land, aquifers, National Parks and Sydney and town catchment areas.”
It also said: “No new or renewed gas exploration licences should be issued until applications have been independently assessed by environmental experts and the community is fully consulted within a strategic planning framework.”
The submission questioned the climate change credentials of CSG, asking the NSW Government Inquiry to request research into the full life-cycle of greenhouse gas emissions from CSG extraction.
