TWO North Western forests are named as “icons under threat” in a new report on natural areas and threatened species at risk from mining and gas in NSW.
The Pilliga Forest near Narrabri and the Leard State Forest near Boggabri are on the list of seven natural areas of NSW that the report, Icons Under Threat, deems as significantly at risk from mining and coal seam gas expansion.
The Hunter Valley’s Warkworth Sands Woodland, Drip Gorge in Central NSW, the Gardens of Stone in the Blue Mountains, and Putty Valley and Woronora near Sydney also made the list.
Using case studies from these areas “highly treasured by their regional communities,” the report claims to provide insights into the thousands of hectares to be clear-felled by mining activities, the damage done to water catchments, and the inadequacies of mining company assessments and biodiversity offsets.
