Little Bird Stands in the Way of Big Mining

The Hunter’s critically endangered regent honeyeater will face a greater threat if plans for mining expansion across the region proceed, a new report has revealed.

The bird – renowned for its brilliant flashes of yellow – was spotted on a Maitland property earlier this year, igniting interest in bird watchers and authorities across the Hunter.

But according to the Icons Under Threat report, issued by the Nature Conservation Council of NSW, Hunter Community Environment Centre and The Wilderness Society, the nomadic bird is one of 17 animal species facing the threat of extinction if future mining goes ahead.

“The Icons Under Threat report is a timely reminder of some of the incredible natural wonders and wildlife at stake if the state government does not implement a more balanced approach to land use and rein in inappropriate mining and coal seam gas activities across NSW,” Nature Conservation Council of NSW CEO Pepe Clarke said.
