HALF of the royalties from Queensland's emerging liquefied natural gas industry will be enshrined in an education trust that forms the first major campaign pitch by the Bligh government ahead of next year's election.
The multi-billion-dollar trust, proposed to either fund immediate education and training programs or individual grants to school-leavers from 2030, aims to harness the spoils of the state's second resources boom.
Premier Anna Bligh yesterday heralded the plan as an Australian first that would redefine Queensland as an education leader after decades of neglect, and would build on recent reforms including the introduction of a preparatory year in 2007. "We have one-off opportunity here. I have a strong view that investing in our children is an investment that will pay dividends for generations. This is not about short-term thinking," Ms Bligh said.
