The Bligh Government has dismissed suggestions its child endowment fund proposal is similar to a policy championed by former federal Labor leader Mark Latham in 2002.
In the lead-up to today's first pre-election debate with Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman, Premier Anna Bligh this week unveiled plans to establish education endowment funds worth up to $9500 when Queenslanders turn 18.
About $1.8 billion in royalties from the state's new liquefied natural gas industry would be channelled into the education trust over the next decade, with an initial $500 contribution deposited into an individual fund for each baby born from mid-next year, followed by a top-up amount in prep year.
LNP campaigners yesterday drew similarities between the nest egg proposal and Mr Latham's 2002 plan to set up endowments funds worth $10,000 when a person turned 18.
