Campbell Newman has told mining companies to improve their environmental and social performance in return for less “red tape” under a Liberal National Party government.
Unveiling a resources and energy strategy, the LNP leader also admitted coal seam gas had been a difficult issue for his party and flagged plans to force compensation deals between miners and landowners to be published.
The move to publish compensation details drew fire from the government, which said the policy would be a "direct attack" on landowners who currently could decide whether to make their deals public.
Making a pitch to Queensland Resources Council members in Brisbane today, Mr Newman pledged to establish a stand-alone department of mining and energy while overhauling legislation and cutting red tape on approval processes.
