Letters to the Editor, Newcastle Herald:
LEWIS has excelled himself in his cartoon portraying the potential effect of coalmining on our country (Herald 11/10).
Two weeks ago I travelled by train through the Upper Hunter. From Singleton to Muswellbrook the track winds through huge piles of overburden that tower over the countryside.
There are occasional glimpses of past diggings, with the boring symmetry and treeless barrenness of the restoration, which the industry claims will restore the countryside to its original state. The rest of the landscape is like the old BHP site at Port Waratah.
I know there is still a lot of Australia left, but there is also a lot of arable land, water, gas, uranium and other desirable elements to be opened up. I hope Newcastle Art Gallery will preserve this particular cartoon and hang it alongside a Dobell or a Drysdale, just to remind future generations of the countryside that once was.
George Simpson, Shortland
