Last week in a submission to the current parliamentary inquiry into the coal seam gas (CSG) industry, the NSW government declared that the development of the industry is essential, and that gas extraction and agriculture will have to operate side by side, come what may.
At no time did the government concede that the industry may actually need to be wound back, because of its adverse impact on agriculture and the environment, in particular the poisoning of subterranean watercourses and the splitting of the beds of surface watercourses so that they are severely reduced, or cease to flow altogether.
The government promised that any adverse impact on ground and surface water would be “minimised” (whatever that means), but the only restriction on the CSG industry was that it would have to produce agricultural impact statements.
