NFF to Map Farming's Global Future

THE National Farmers Federation is pushing for sweeping reforms across the agriculture sector to enable Australia to capitalise on the anticipated boom in global demand for food and fibre over the next 40 years.
The peak farming lobby group yesterday announced it would develop a "blueprint for agriculture" to map the future of the sector and identify the key challenges facing Australia's 140,000 farmers.

NFF president Jock Laurie said the review would examine farmers' access to global and domestic markets, the capacity of the research and development sector to drive innovation, natural resource restrictions and problems with infrastructure.

It will also look at the challenges imposed on agriculture from mining and coal-seam gas exploration, and the Gillard government's carbon policy -- including allowing farmers access to emerging abatement markets through the carbon farming initiative.
