More Talk in Pipeline

A proposed pipeline to help Orange with its long-term water needs is causing much debate along the Macquarie.

Orange deputy mayor Councillor Jeff Whitton said he could not understand the complaint that Orange was not entitled to use the water.

“Bathurst already draws from the Macquarie, Wellington does and Dubbo does.
“The residents of Orange feel somewhat insulted that when we’re putting in an application to do similar we’re being discriminated against.

“Surely we’re also entitled to take water from the river to support our city,” Cr Whitton said.
Clean Up Australia founder Ian Kiernan praised Orange City Council over the development of its stormwater harvesting scheme, but he told the Central Western Daily “taking water from the Macquarie was not the answer to Orange’s water shortage”.

“It’s not their water. I don’t think Orange City Council has been sufficiently responsible in this. We’re in a global freshwater crisis.
