Mining Plans Spark Toxic Water Fears

There is mounting concern on the Dorrigo Plateau about the impact antimony mining could have on local waterways.

The old Wild Cattle Creek mine at Bielsdown has been taken over by Chinese interests.

The mine was first drilled in the late 1800s but a scoping study earlier this year found the potential for good financial returns.

Coffs Harbour Greens' councillor Mark Graham says any expansion of mining could see toxic waste leach into pristine local waterways.

"Antimony is an element, a metal very similar to arsenic and it's very toxic, it leads to a large number of human health consequences," he said.
