COAL seam gas mining in the Otways could seriously affect Geelong's drinking water supply, according to environmental groups lobbying against it.
Ahead of a community meeting in Geelong tonight to discuss the mining technique, Friends of the Earth campaigns co-ordinator Cam Walker said Barwon Water should be "very nervous" about exploration licences in the region.
Coal seam gas mining involves drilling 100-1500m below ground to extract natural methane or carbon dioxide gas that has been absorbed by coal.
Corangamite MP Darren Cheeseman, who is a qualified geologist, echoed the Friends of the Earth's call to ban mining.
