Mine Workers to Down Tools

WORKERS at New Acland coal mine near Oakey will hold work stoppages and overtime bans this weekend as the dispute with New Hope over its wage offer continues.

An overtime ban will start tonight from 6pm and continue until Monday morning, while workers will down their tools for the last six hours of Sunday's night shift.

Shane Brunker of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union claimed New Acland workers were the lowest paid mine workers in Queensland.

Mr Bunker said New Hope's refusal to increase its wage offer meant workers were left with little option but to hold work stoppages.

"They're saying they've got no money left, we don't believe them, especially now that they've given themselves a huge pay rise," he said.

"Our blokes are very adamant enough is enough, (industrial action) is the way to go."
New Hope continues to stand by its wage offer, saying it has negotiated in good faith and "will continue to do so".
