Mid-Western Region will call on other NSW councils to support its push for a review of the Mining Act through a motion to the Local Government Association (LGA) conference at Shoalhaven from October 23-26.
Council has put forward a motion calling on the LGA to ask the NSW Government to review the Act to require mining companies to compensate landowners for loss of water resulting from mining.
Council’s motion notes that when a mining development occurs in a region there is always a significant effect on the aquifers surrounding the area of that mine.
“Those water sources are without doubt key to adjoining land use such as farming.
“For example if a coal mine sets up an open cut coal mining development in a farming region then the water aquifer is very badly effected if not destroyed. This can almost destroy the farming in the region.
