Karuah residents say a legal briefing yesterday has equipped them to deal with any tactics used by a mining company searching for gold in the Barrington Tops.
Lawyers from the Environmental Defenders Office or E-D-O briefed members of the Karuah River Protection Group.
The group is angry about Gold of Ophir's applications for exploration licenses east of Scone and around Dungog and Gloucester.
Group spokeswoman, Di Johnston says the E-D-O told members about their rights.
"We probably can't stop the exploration but we can certainly make things very difficult for them by banding together and protesting and talking to them and sending emails," she said.
"Getting in touch with the Council, writing to the members.
"Just generally telling them that it's a totally unsuitable area for gold mining."
Di Johnston says the area must be protected.
"It is truly the most beautiful area," she said.
"Lovely, lovely state forest just right next door.
"Beautiful river and platypuses swimming around and if there is ever any pollution from a dam that the gold mining people have it could float right down and cause terrible problems to the fishing and the tourism."
