Dharawal to Become a National Park Soon

DHARAWAL National Park is expected to be a reality by the end of this year, following a compromise over mining operations.

Premier Barry O'Farrell announced the park would cover 98.7 per cent of the existing Dharawal State Conservation Area on Sydney's southern fringe.

He said two small areas that would be excluded were essential to BHP Billiton's ongoing and proposed mining operations in the Illawarra.

The Georges River Environmental Alliance, which led the campaign for the new national park, gave the deal the "thumbs up".

"This is fantastic news," alliance secretary Sharyn Cullis said.

"It's more than 98 per cent of the area we were fighting for and includes the 2000 swamps, which are the headwaters of the river.
